Port Blair Tourism: Top Attractions & Things to Do

The capital city of the Andaman Islands, Port Blair, is the most lively destination in the union territory and a beautiful blend of history, nature, and adventure. The city boasts everything, from iconic colonial attractions and sandy beaches to adrenaline-inducing water sports and diverse marine wildlife. Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover, or an adventurous freak, Port Blair serves a package that is nothing like any other island in the archipelago. Daytime attractions will interest couples with the evening aspect, which makes this ultimate guide an explanation of how to plan your tickets for a more complete itinerary highlighting cultural insights, scenic beauty, and entertainment that can make your visit unforgettable. Travelers often explore different options like Andaman group packages and Andaman budget packages to plan a well-structured trip

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island (Ross Island) – Colonial Heritage

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island ( formerly Ross Island) is of historical significance as the first-ever British administrative settlement in the Andaman Islands. The silhouette of pre-independence ruins & structures at Kolonaki provides visitors insight into the colonial past with its majestic backdrop. Many travelers compare destinations before visiting, such as in this detailed guide on Port Blair vs Havelock Island.

Visitors can explore interesting remnants like Japanese bunkers and World War 2-era cannons, as well as colonial buildings that are now partly overgrown by foliage. It is also a run of wildlife, such as deer and bird life, that wanders around the island, making it ideal for some nature photography alongside exploring the history.

One of the key attractions here is the evening light and sound show, which dramatically tells visitors about the island’s history along with India’s struggle during the pre-independence era through narration, music, and colourful lighting.

Boats leave for the island from the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, generally between 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM. Both entry and boat tickets should be booked in advance. It is closed on Wednesdays. For a more wholesome experience, most people fill a day visiting North Bay Island, along with this place, often included in Andaman family tour packages.

Water Sports and Marine Adventures

North Bay Island – Water Activities Hub

North Bay Island, along with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, is a key attraction from Port Blair that offers a variety of water sports activities. Due to the number of water sport activities offered, a day trip to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island and North Bay Island is very popular among tourists and is commonly part of adventure tour packages.

A ferry ride across the sea is required to get to the North Bay Island. The Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex operates ferries. They are open between 8:30 AM and 10 AM. Tickets for the ferry or entry to the North Bay Island have to be purchased in advance, and North Bay Island is closed for entry on Wednesdays.

You can spend hours on North Bay Island because of the facilities available, which include food stalls, changing rooms, and restrooms.

North Bay Island offers a lot of activities for the adventurous and the beginner, and all skill levels in between. For the more adventurous skill levels, scuba diving and sea walking for a close experience with the sea, and for the less adventurous, there is snorkeling to just view the coral from the surface of the water, and a glass-bottom boat ride. For a bit of added adventure, semi-cubmarine coral safari and speed boat rides are available. The semi-submarine coral safari is the only one of its kind and is a great opportunity for those who want to see the underwater creatures from an enclosed underwater chamber rather than from above.

Corbyn’s Cove Beach – City’s Closest Beach

Corbyn’s Cove Beach, located just about 8 kilometers from the center of Port Blair, is the closest of the beaches. It’s easy to reach by road (and is open every day without an entrance fee), making it an ideal spot to grab a quick break. Many travelers also combine this visit with experiences like sunset in Port Blair for a complete day.

The crescent of the beach is surrounded by a few coconut woods providing an ample environment for swimming, sunbathing, and just relaxing. Along the beach, a few businesses offer jet skiing and speed boat rides for people to take a break from relaxing on the beach.

Corbyn’s Cove also provides a few tiny snack and drink kiosks located along the beach, making this a great place to grab a quick beach escape for the whole family.

Nature and Wildlife Experiences

Chidiyatapu – Sunset and Bird Watching Paradise

Chidiyatapu is about 32km from Port Blair and is a calm place famous for its amazing sunset views and birdlife, and is a birdwatcher’s paradise. It is also an easily accessible cab ride from Port Blair to Chidiyatapu, making it an essential stop for nature lovers and photographers. The name ‘Chidiyatpau’ means ‘Bird Island’, making it a paradise for bird watchers who can spot a variety of local and migratory birds. Many honeymooners include this in curated Andaman honeymoon tour packages.

The spectacular sunset views are a major attraction of Chidiyatapu, as the sky fills with breathtaking colors as the sun sets. This place also offers trekking, which is great for the adventurous, especially the famous trek to Mundapahad. If you love nature, Chidiyatapu is the perfect place to come. It is open every day and is free to enter, but it is important to leave before it closes after sunset.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Wandoor (27 km from Port Blair) is home to the Mahatma Gandhi National Park, which is the first Marine National Park in India, and it includes the Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Islands, both of which are popular tourist destinations. This experience is often included in premium Andaman luxury packages.

The park is home to a unique method of regulated eco-tourism. Both the Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Islands are closed and open to the public every 6 months to allow for natural coral regeneration. Visitors are able to view healthy, thriving coral and a multitude of tropical fish through the glass-bottom boats that are a part of the eco-friendly coral viewing excursions.

To visit the park, travelers have to secure their entry permits and ferry tickets in advance, and they can travel from Wandoor Jetty for a 30-minute ferry ride to the park. The park is closed to visitors on Mondays, and the park opens from 6 am to 2 pm, allowing for a half-day excursion for visitors.

Post-Sunset Activities and Evening Entertainment

Cellular Jail Light and Sound Show – Historical Drama

An evening attraction that is popular in Port Blair is the Light and Sound Show at Cellular Jail. The show depicts the lives of the Indian Freedom Fighters in a narrative that is textured with painted light and accompanied by a powerful musical score. This powerful show is embedded with the emotional sacrifices that are synonymous with the walls of the prisons.

The show has three time slots available. The show lasts between 50 and 60 minutes. The show is available in Hindi on a daily basis, and it is available in English on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Show tickets can be purchased in advance from the show’s site.

Ross Island Light and Sound Show – Colonial History

Located at Ross Island, this Light and Sound Show provides a historical experience with the backdrop of colonial ruins. It describes the British era and the struggles during the pre-independence period. The captivating set design of the island adds to the dramatic storytelling.

The show starts at 5:30 PM and is conducted in Hindi and English. You would have to book your tickets online for the show, and boat tickets have to be bought separately at the Aberdeen Jetty. There is also an evening boat that departs around 3:00 PM from the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex. It is a must to plan this experience as tickets and timings have to be coordinated perfectly, but it is worth the effort as it is a completely different experience compared to the Cellular Jail Show.

Dinner Cruises – Romantic Evening Experience

A relaxing and enjoyable evening experience is possible with the Port Blair dinner cruises. The TSG Bella Bay Dinner Cruise is one of the options that, in addition to dining and live entertainment, offers a semi-submarine ride.

Dinner cruises provide an enjoyable experience that includes a multi-cuisine dinner and live music from local bands. The cruise offers an open sea view, and the sea breeze and dim lighting create a romantic atmosphere for families and couples to relax. Dinner cruises also provide a great venue to celebrate special occasions, and advance reservations are strongly recommended, particularly around the holiday period. The capacity is limited. The cruises leave Junglighat at 7:00 PM and last for approximately. 2.5 hours.

Conclusion

Port Blair stands out as a destination that offers something for every traveler, from the historical legacy of Cellular Jail to stunning beaches, marine parks, and wildlife experiences. Adventure lovers, families, and couples can all find engaging activities, including water sports and island exploration. Evening highlights like light and sound shows and dinner cruises add a charm to the experience. Plan your itinerary wisely with advance bookings to enjoy a seamless trip.
